IN-PERSON EVENTS

Note: See our Sample Activities Schedule for an example of different activities offered over a month.

  • ADVENTURES IN LONDON & BEYOND: Adventures include London tours of museums, gardens and historical sites; day trips to picturesque sites throughout England; and occasional overnight trips to places like Paris, Giverny and Versailles. 
  • AFTERNOON TEA: Enjoy the quintessentially English tradition of Afternoon Tea among friends at unique or lauded restaurants in the London area. Join us for tea, scones and a touch of total civility! 
    • BOOK GROUP: An informal, lively group for those who enjoy reading. We meet to discuss a book each month, following up with lunch together for those who can. Our books range from classics to contemporary.
    • BUMPS TO JUMPS (MOM SQUAD): Provides support and discussion for expectant mothers (bumps), mothers of new babies and mothers of toddler age children (jumps). The group offers a great opportunity for mothers and children to socialize together. 
        • PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S GROUP (PWG): Welcomes all AWC members, whether or not they are presently working outside the home. Programs include interesting speakers, workshops, business leaders and social events. The PWG meets on a monthly basis and in the evening.
        • BUY LOW, SELL HIGH: Learn and explore the basics of the U.S. stock markets (NYSE & NASDAQ). Expand your knowledge on investments, discuss trends and strategies, and broaden your portfolios. 
        • CELLAR DWELLERS: Join us for a relaxed evening of wine tasting as we explore different wines/spirits and their origins. We’ll meet monthly at various wine venues in London. Partners are welcome!
        • CLASSICAL MUSIC GROUP:  Whether it’s getting a grip on Handel or going for Baroque, listening to some of the up-and-coming student recitals at the Royal Academies, or savoring strings in a historic church, we explore the numerous musical opportunities London has to offer. We meet about once a month at various venues around the city, with either an early lunch before or coffee after the concert to discuss the musical program. Occasional tours and evening programs may be added in the future.
        • CONTEMPORARY ART & DESIGN: London has an incredibly rich and diverse array of contemporary art and design exhibits and galleries, as well as interesting and knowledgeable people to guide us in our art journeys! Let's explore and learn together!
        • CRAFT & CHAT: A group of crafters who meet in each other’s homes and often proceed to lunch at a local restaurant. Meetings provide a friendly forum for lovers of all kinds of needlework (including but not limited to knitting, needlepoint, quilting and cross-stitching) to come together, meet new friends, learn new skills, and share expertise. All skill levels are welcome, and any and all crafting!
          • CURIOSITY SHOPPERS: For those who want to take advantage of the wonderful shopping experiences around London beyond the usual high street shops!
          • DRINKS, ETC: Join this fun monthly social event held on Friday or Saturday evenings and introduce your spouse or partner to your London friends. Bring a beverage and snack to share and enjoy the company of new and old friends at different AWC members’ homes. 
            • EMPTY NESTERS: Kids off to college and you're off to London! How do you cope and share all the issues in this situation? Join us for coffee, lunch and other get-togethers. Everyone is welcome. 
            • FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD: Are you interested in food (cooking it, eating it, learning about it)? Come along with Food, Glorious Food on our multicultural culinary adventures in and around London. We explore markets, we cook foreign cuisines, we learn, we eat, and we have fun!
            • FOREVER 29: These activities are geared for our younger members, but there is no age minimum or maximum. This group is busy with all London has to offer.
            • GLOBAL CITIZENS CLUB (GCC): At GCC our goals are to empower women and children through the support of human rights & education while connecting with global communities. Join us to explore different cultures and take meaningful action.

              • HEALTH & FITNESS: Chips and ‘puds’ doing damage to your waistline? Just love a healthy lifestyle? Join the Health and Fitness fanatics for runs around London or to try new fitness trends. Learn ways to stay healthy and in shape — and have fun while doing it!
              • HIKING: Experience the English countryside on foot. Hikes range from 7 to 12 miles in length and 3 to 10 in difficulty. Difficulty ranges from 1 (easy) to 10 (difficult) and takes into account factors such as hills, the number, and steepness. The benefits include exercise, making new friends and enjoying a pub lunch. There is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing!
              • LET’S DO LUNCH: A fun opportunity to try new and different eating establishments in and around Central London. We incorporate different themes Like Chinese New Year in Chinatown, Cinco de Mayo at a Mexican restaurant, and al fresco dining (weather permitting) in the summertime.
                • LONDON WALKS: For inquisitive members who wish to learn more about the city’s exciting past, as well as its modern and innovative aspects. Join London Walks for a variety of sightseeing experiences in and around London, usually with a Blue Badge guide. 
                • LONG-TERM LADIES: Are you permanently or semi-permanently in London?  If you are here long-term (you can define that yourself!) and would like to meet for coffee, drinks, lunch or dinner with others, this is the group for you.
                • MAH JONG: This ancient Chinese game played with tiles has gained popularity around the world, Mah Jong exercises your brain and is a great backdrop for building friendships with other members. Don’t know how to play? Come to one of our monthly teaching days.
                • MEXICAN TRAIN DOMINOES: Join us for a fun and easy game of dominoes that requires a little bit of thinking, but mostly chatting and nibbling. No experience is necessary — everyone is welcome! 
                  • MONDAY MORNING COFFEE (MMC): The MMC group has traveled London in search of the perfect cup of Joe! We have drunk flat whites at urinals, sipped our lattes with chocolate spoons and even given English bacon the college try whilst enjoying a 360 degree view of the London skyline. Along the way we have shared stories and laughs. Why not join us and get your Monday morning started with a jolt of caffeine?
                  • PODCAST CLUB: A low key group of women dedicated to discovering, sharing, and discussing podcasts. We meet about every two weeks to enjoy each other's company and examine various topics. The podcasts range from one single podcast episode to several podcasts about one topic. 
                    • PUB QUIZ: Have you ever wanted to experience a traditional British pub quiz but weren’t sure you would understand the questions? Here’s your chance! Our fabulous quizmaster creates special quizzes just for the AWC, so no need to study up on premier league soccer or 1000 years of British history. And it’s not just trivia — some of the challenges are visual, musical, and even edible! Win or lose, you are guaranteed to have fun!
                    • RONALD McDONALD HOUSE: Once a month a group of our members prepare a meal for the guests of the Ronald McDonald House. These families of seriously ill children being treated at the Evelina Children’s Hospital truly appreciate the caring touch that these home cooked meals provide.
                    • SOUP KITCHEN: Every other Monday morning, AWC volunteers help prep and serve food to the homeless at the Soup Kitchen at the American International Church. They also help out in the Clothes Closet, distributing donated clothing and toiletries.  Join us — it's a great way to make a difference and is very much appreciated by our guests.
                    • THEATRE: The theatre quietens… the lights dim… and the curtain slowly opens. London Stage is world-renowned with a variety of shows featured daily. Join us for a fun afternoon that includes lunch at a restaurant near Leicester Square followed by a matinee at a nearby theatre.
                    • THURSDAY PUB: Meet friends — new and old! Here’s a good way to find out what’s going on, ask questions of your neighbors, etc. When you get at the venue you can order whatever you’d like to eat or drink from the bar and join our group.
                    • TRAVEL GROUP: These trips are organized throughout the year to various European and worldwide destinations. No planning involved; just sign up!
