Description of Event: The first part of this route- following the Ridgeway (the oldest long distance footpath in England, 5000 years) along the Chiltern escarpment to Ivinghoe Beacon- is exhilarating, offering downland scenery as fine as anything on the South Downs. From the Beacon itself, it seems as if you can see half of England on a fine day. Then, by way of contrast, we will be plunged into the ancient Chiltern beechwood of the Ashridge Estate lovingly preserved by the National Trust. Our pub lunch will be at the Bridgewater Arms in Little Gaddesden.
NOTE: Wear appropriate footwear (walking boots and walking socks), a waterproof jacket, a rucksack and clothing appropriate for the weather, conditions, and hiking in the English countryside. Please bring shower caps or grocery bags to cover muddy boots at lunch. The hike leader will purchase train tickets at a discounted group rate on the day. If you do not need a ticket, please inform the hike leaders. If you have any queries about the outbound train please go to either https://www.thetrainline.com or use the National Rail App.
Any questions please contact the leader the day before. Any last minute information will be provided on the AWC Facebook page.
