Living in London
(8th Edition) An indispensable guidebook primarily geared towards assisting Americans who are relocating to the London area. It is published by the Junior League of London and available at their website www.jll.org.uk or contact them at 020 7449 8159 (phone) or 020 7629 1996 (fax). This book can be especially helpful if you can get it before you move to the UK.Living and Working in Britain : A Survival Handbook by David Hampshire (Survival Books Ltd.) A great guide for anyone moving the UK - especially those who are hoping to work out employment here.
Studying and Living in Britain Published by the British Council, this has lots of information on moving to and living in the UK with special information for those planning to attend university while in Britain. Available through major booksellers.
Culture Shock!: Britain by Terry Tan (published by Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co.) The Culture Shock! series has many books with loads of information for expats moving into almost any country in the world - including this very useful guide to moving in with the Brits. Helpful to anyone moving to the UK - not just to London!
Culture Shock! London at Your Door by Orin Hargraves (published by Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co.) Another in the Culture Shock! series, this excellent book offers a very enlightening look at the habits and customs of Londoners including advice on getting around, places to live, work and play and the social calendar of the city.
Living and Working in London by Janet MacDonald. Another of the Survival Books, this gives advice specific to relocating to and working in London.
U.S. Expatriate Handbook Guide to Living and Working Abroad by John Adams. This book gives the reader an overview of all the issues facing business people when they're asked to take on overseas assignments. While every assignment varies with country and position, there are common issues every American should examine before accepting becoming an expatriate. The author draws on his years of experience working with European expatriates to provide useful guidelines to determine if the assignment is right for the reader.
Where to Live in London by Sara McConnell (Simon & Schuster UK). A guide to the different residential areas of London along with approximate housing costs and what's on offer in each area. A great help when trying to decide where to look for your new home or flat!
American in Britain
A bi-monthly magazine published in the UK for the American community. Can be received in home or picked up at many American social clubs. Lots of useful information on what is going on in the UK/US community and helpful information on taxes and real estate.
